Abstract
— Permeation tests were conducted by Devanathan's electrochemical method and a newly invented electro-vacuum method. Experiments illustrated that as the microstructure changed, the diffusion constant, D, changed. The steel BS 4360 when quenched, decreased its D value by 3.7 times that of the original plate. Comparing the behavior of AIS I 4340 with API 3C52, it is noted that the D value of the latter alloy is 2.23 times that of API X52, due to the presence of less C and Ni content. Ingress of hydrogen increased with the reduction of voltage and pH. For alloy BS 4360, when the charging voltage was dropped by -400 my, the D value increased by 62%. Thickness would not have a realistic effect, but cold work reduced D. The same alloy when cold worked by 72%, its D value decreased by 15%. The difference in D measured by the two methods of permeation was due to the variation in material, apparatus design and operation. Hydrogen degradation during stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue tests is one of the two processes of crack propogation. Immersion, dynamic polarization, stress corrosion (dynamic and static), corrosion fatigue tests, cathodic protection and fractographic studies were conducted in seawater and sour (hydrogen sulfide generated by sulfate reducing bacteria) environments. Overall, it was concluded that with regards to Nernest's equation, as the partial pressure of hydrogen increased, the value of D increased. Furthermore, the speed of hydrogen diffusion increased. In the sour environment, the overtaking mechanism of failure was found to be hydrogen embrittlement rather than anodic dissolution.

Abstract
The effects of Cl− on the electronic properties of the n-type passive film on Fe and the p-type passive film on Ni in pH 8.5 buffer solution were investigated using photocurrent spectroscopy and Mott–Schottky analysis in order to elucidate the mechanism of passivity breakdown on metals. Metastable pitting events were observed in the potentiostatic current transients chronoamperograms for Fe measured at 0.7 VSCE when 0.1 M of NaCl was added to the solution, demonstrating that Cl− induces passivity breakdown. However, the Mott–Schottky analysis revealed chloride ion, present at a concentration of 0.10 M, did not change the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the passive film on Fe, indicating that the oxygen vacancy is not responsible for the passivity breakdown. It was observed by Mott–Schottky analysis that as the concentration of Cl− in the solution increased, the concentration of cation vacancy in the passive film on Ni also increased, which is in concert with the view that metal vacancies are responsible for the breakdown of passivity on nickel. Finally, by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to interrogate the point defect generation and annihilation reactions that occur at the metal/film and film/solution interfaces, we show that the observed increase in cation vacancy concentration in the passive film on Ni is due to chloride-catalyzed ejection of cations from the film/solution
interface. These findings are inconsistent with chloride-catalyzed film dissolution and chloride penetration mechanisms for passivity breakdown, but they are entirely consistent with cation vacancy generation at the barrier layer/solution interface and subsequent cation vacancy condensation at the metal/barrier layer interface, as postulated in the point defect model

Abstract
This paper discusses the validity and limitations of the Tafel extrapolation method for the
determination of corrosion rates for activation-controlled corrosion processes. Experimental
corrosion rates determined by the Tafel method are compared with corrosion rates obtained
by an independent chemical (i.e., non-electrochemical) method for iron in hydrochloric acid,
iron in 3.5% NaCl, and for titanium in boiling 1 M sulfuric acid. The methods of confirmation
of the corrosion rates involved colorimetric analysis of the dissolved cation or the use of an
ion-implanted inert Xe marker. Additional examples taken from the literature involving other
metals and other methods of validation are also discussed

ABSTRACT
There are huge drilling operations in most areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia nowadays searching for potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. The increasing expense of importing drilling fluid components for oil and gas wells, drilling, especially clays, necessitates the testing of some local clays which are less expensive and are abundantly available. Therefore, representative Tabuk formation clay samples from the northern and central provinces of Saudi Arabia have been studied. The clays were mineralogically investigated using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The physicochemical properties of clay suspensions with and without common drilling fluid additives were measured. These properties include Theology, filtration loss, density and pH. The thermal stability of clay minerals and suspensions was studied. Since sample 2 of the Tabuk clay produced better results, its thermal stability was further studied by autoclaving its suspensions at temperatures bet wen 25 and 121°C after the addition of high-viscosity carboxy methyl cellulose (HV-CMC) and XC-polymer. A concentration of 10% by weight of sample 2 of the Tabuk formation clay plus 1% NaOH and 0.5 XC-polymer produced the best theological, filtration and thermal stability. Corrosion in drilling operations is strongly related to the composition of drilling fluids. A concentration of 10% by weight of sample 2 of the Tabuk formation clay plus 0.5% NaOH and 0.5 XC-polymer developed minimum corrosion rates as revealed by corrosivity tests (static and dynamic) and surface morphology investigations
